pray for his son and family.
Jerry Cappello has passed away. Gus Rethwisch called me personally to confirm. He does not lie about stuff like this.
I saw Jerry just hours before his death on Saturday night in Portland, OR. I am told he went back to his room after lifting Saturday, was sweating profusely and complained of chest pain and later collapsed and died that night.
I was the last lifter of the night at Gus's Portland Nationals and Jerry was in the warmup room with me. It was just me and him before my last lift. He was leaning over a chair and looked really pissed off, like I usually see him if he misses a big deadlift.
He got up as my name was called on deck in the warmup room, put his hand on my shoulder and said, "tear 'em up Brent"...and then he walked away. It was the last thing he said to me and the last time I saw him alive.
Absolutely tragic. The man was the fiercest competitor I know. He once told me a story of beating a football team something like 65-0 and still had his starters in because he didn't believe in letting up. He was later fired. But it was that same attitude he held in lifting. He always wanted the weight and he was always a competitor. And, from what I saw, he was an exceptional family man.
I pray to God that his family rest at peace with this misery and that his soul is taken. My best to you friend. I will always tear it up for you. Thanks for being an inspiration to us all ....to the man I know could outpull just about every man in the room at any given time.
Jerry Capello, R.I.P.
